Judge M. C. Brown (Melville) was one of the pioneer attorneys of Wyoming. He was appointed assistant assessor internal revenue under President Lincoln and also served as assessor. In addition, he belonged to the second territorial legislature, was the mayor of Laramie for two years, and served as president of the Constitutional Convention. Later, in 1900, he was appointed by President McKinley to serve as U.S. judge for the district of Alaska.
